In the world of the future, houses would have the ability to generate their own electricity. They would no longer be reliant on being connected to the regular power lines, because they would be generating their own supply of energy. That has become a more distinct possibility now with the invention of the solar painters.
This new form of paint is the invention of Professor Paul Dastoor in the University of Newcastle in Australia. It is a form of solar cell technology that has no environmental impact. It is based on semiconducting nanoparticles that can be dispersed in water. This would allow it to be printed and applied on surfaces, using water based paints. Right now the material can be used on large sheets of plastic that could be used in the same way that solar panels are being used today. The possibilities for it are numerous.
As the technology becomes more developed, it would then be possible to apply the paint containing the material directly on the surface of a structure such as a house for example and then the energy that it produces could then be tapped for supplying the power needs of the household.
Still Needs Some Work
The system is still not perfect. Right now, they could only apply it on large plastic sheets and not on the surfaces of houses directly. The developers still have not perfected the making of the paint that would also be a practical surface covering.
Another problem is the efficiency of the cells in generating electricity once they are in place. This has always been the weak point of most of the solar technologies that are now being used. Of the great amount of solar energy that they are getting they can only convert a little of it into electrical energy. A great amount of it is just wasted or is turned into heat energy.
If this technology is going to be used on a commercial level then it is efficiency in converting energy would have to be improved significantly so that a house can be completely reliant on it for its energy needs.
Despite the fact that there are still some problems with it, there is a tremendous amount of possibility with this kind of technology. Just imagine the time when all homes would be completely independent when it comes to their power needs and there is no longer any need for power lines.
